Pussy rock n roll...
I hate pop music right now. Which is awkward, because everybody else seems to be fine with it. Blissfully listening to their dangermouse record or whatever. Bah. I miss punk rock like it was in the beginning. Which, I guess, makes me a whiner, but I don't care. It's been a long time since music has excited me as much as the first time I heard the Ramones, The New York Dolls, Iggy and the Stooges, etc. What happened to that energy that seemed to drive the youth culture and annoy the parents? People were doing interesting stuff with rock and the future seemed to be wide open back then. I know it's partially my thirty seven year old perspective on the thing, but fuck, am I that wrong? Is it just me or has rock n roll been completely comatose for the last decade and a half? We need an injection of raw energy again. We need our asses kicked. Will somebody please step up to the plate and make something interesting?!
p.s. don't write me any emails about how great you think Andre 3000 is or how Green Day is still a quality band or how you think the Donnas are great. I'm not listening.
p.s.s. I blame clear channel for much of this. Buying every damned radio station in the country. Kiss my ass, fuckers.
p.s.s.s. Whew. That felt good.

I know what you mean, most new music sucks really bad. I can't even listen to the radio anymore without getting pissed off.
Green Day has always sucked, seriously. In the videos the lead singer makes these facial expressions like someone is shoving a cornucopia into his ass. God, the Donnas suck too, they have the stupidest music video ever, where they are like rocking out in some giant space vagina. I hope both there and Green Day's tour busses crash into each other on a mountain road and go off the edge in a ball of fire; that would rule.
I mean, Bad Religion is still good if you like old-school punk, and CKY isn't so bad, but you're right for the most part. There just doesn't seem to be anything worth listening to lately.
Paul,
I'm going to go ahead and blame the dearth of good rebellious rock on the commodification of rebellion by consumerist culture. (See those fancy thesis terms!)
Also, to drive home your thirty seven year old perspective, I took a college course on punk music -- we covered every band you mentioned and then some. Not that this makes me anything close to an expert, just I know who you're talking about.
